DESCRIPTION:When Billie Holiday first heard the records of Louis Armstrong
  and Bessie Smith\, rather than copy their vocal delivery Billie interpr
 eted tunes her own way.  It was this and her life experiences that made h
 er a uniquely different vocalist from others.\n\nAfter a turbulent childho
 od\, Holiday began singing in nightclubs in Harlem where she was heard b
 y producer John Hammond\, who liked her voice. Holiday signed a recording
  contract with Brunswick in 1935. Her collaboration with Teddy Wilson 
 produced the hit: ‘What a Little Moonlight Can Do’ which became an enc
 hanting jazz standard.\n\nA concert to celebrate many of Billie Holiday's 
 signature songs - tunes that affected the way people viewed the times. Sta
 tements about Billie Holiday from other musicians who knew her included: I
  remember her happiness at times - She was a thrill to play for - She was 
 an improvising Jazz Genius\n\nThis concert will feature some of Billie Hol

 inet)\, John Conley (String Bass)\, Rod Andrew (Percussion) and June Garbe
